Windows Live Mail (WLM) can be used on XP, Vista, and Windows 7.
There are (currently) three versions of WLM:
| 1. | Windows Live Mail 2011 -- available for Windows 7 and Vista |
| 2. | Windows Live Mail pre 2011 -- for Windows 7 and Vista (this is no longer available for download but may exist on current machines). |
| 3. | Windows Live Mail for XP |
The three versions are mutually incompatible. That is, the WLM data base can not be transferred between these disparate versions.
If you are planning to transfer WLM from a Vista machine or Windows 7 machine to a new Windows 7 machine, be sure to install the WLM 2011 upgrade before doing the transfer.
If transferring between machines running the same versions of WLM - you can use the "Restore All Mail Folders and/or Data Files" function of Express Assist or Win Mail Backup.
If transferring between disparate version of WLM, you must use the "Restore all Email Folders for Import" function of Express Assist or Win Mail Backup.
Note: the Contacts in WLM may not be directly transferrable.
